About
Every blog needs to have its purpose. Of course, a blog could have purposes, but still, something must lie at the bottom. Well, for Erin and I, the primary purpose of this blog is to learn how to parent ourselves! For in our experience, we don’t really know what we know until we write it down. Speaking helps (and we do a lot of that–especially to one another!) but it’s not quite the same as writing things down on paper or computer. Writing, in our opinion, should be considered one of the best ways to learn.
And there is no doubt that we have much to learn. At the time of this writing, we have two children, Abigail Lee and Elijah Joseph. Abigail is four years old and as intense a personality as we have seen (although we know full well where it came from). Elijah is almost two years old and it seems, a little more easy going than his older sister (incidentally, we don’t know if this will last, because such a personality is not in the genes!). We love them both and because we love them, we long to train them in the ways of the Lord. For as much as we love them, we love Jesus much more.
That being said, we have experienced enough already to know that the process is by no means easy. Sanctified sinners aiming to raise up ‘little saints’ in an unsanctified world is, in fact, an impossible task. Only by the grace of God can we know any success in our labors. Much wisdom is needed. So also is perseverance and diligence and discipline, and most of all, a clear vision of the God we love and long to point our children to.
We have read our share of parenting books and will read (and re-read) still more. But as any honest parent will tell you, no matter how many books you read (or even write!), the application of such truths is by no means easy. In the end, you have to learn the lessons yourselves. So that is what this blog is about. It’s primarily about learning lessons. And it is our prayer that these lessons will serve to benefit us, our children, our children’s children (etc. etc.) and everyone who chooses to listen in. The lessons will no doubt be varied and many, and we will write them down as they come.
Incidentally (and finally), we know there is a risk to beginning such a blog. For in beginning such a venture, we realize that the Lord will probably teach us many and varied lessons with a view towards effectively helping others learn the same. Well, suffice it to say that we know the risk and are praying for the grace to not only learn, but to also encourage you. The task is by no means easy, but as is usually the case, the things that come hard for the sake of the kingdom are filled with utmost joy!
O Lord, for Your name’s sake, see fit to teach Erin and I many and varied lesson in parenthood. Do so for our own hearts’ and our own children, Lord. Do so also for all who are laboring with us in this great high calling that we call parenthood. Bless this venture as you see fit Father. Do that which will serve to magnify Jesus most. Help us to labor and persist in the task of parenting and blogging in a way that honors You! We are weak and lowly, but You are a God of infinite strength. See fit to make Yourself known to the world by being our help. Grant us wisdom. Grant us diligence. Grant us grace upon grace. Magnify Your Son in the answer to these prayers, for it is in His name that we pray. Amen and Amen.
Seeking Him with you,
Joe and Erin Crispin
